Sustainable Sanitary Pads for Sustainable Girls’ Education and Future

Sustainable Sanitary Pads for Sustainable Girls’ Education and Future

Implemented with support from Youth Empowerment Fund–Global Youth Mobilization (YEF-GYM), during the 2025–2026 academic calendar.

This project addressed menstrual hygiene challenges among rural schoolgirls by introducing ecofriendly, reusable cloth sanitary pads. It was implemented in Ng’onga and Mangombo Primary Schools, directly benefiting 353 teenage girls and indirectly reaching 300 peers. Beneficiaries received starter cloth pads and training in manual fabrication, equipping them with lifelong skills for menstrual health management.

To strengthen sustainability, the initiative trained 20 mothers as mentors and trainers, ensuring community ownership and intergenerational knowledge transfer. Additionally, four female teachers served as project overseers within the schools, embedding the program into the education system.

By combining access to sanitary products with skills training and mentorship, the project promoted girls’ dignity, reduced absenteeism, and fostered gender equality, while building local capacity for continued pad production and awareness.
